Sofkee Spoons

Sofkee or Safki or various spellings, is a traditional Southeastern Native dish made from hominy and meat.  The eating of sofkee upon entering a house is essentially a method of saying both you're welcome in the house and you're glad to be there.

The spoon used in serving hominy has relatively standard styles among those cultural groups that were called "Creeks and Seminoles" by Europeans.  The examples below are from museums, the lower is a reproduction made for me by Sis & D's Handmade Spoons of MS.  A link to their website is below the image.

The photos don't do these beautiful spoons justice, and don't show off the lines very well.  They are close copies of the shape of the spoon in the Am. Mus. Nat. History above.  The eating spoons were made by them as well.
